PROKON is an extremely user-friendly program with extensive Help files. Yet an intensive one-day training course helps tremendously to get first-time users up and running in the minimum possible time, or to provide experienced users with knowledge of short-cuts to increase their efficiency.
The Level 1 courses are aimed at new graduates or engineers new to PROKON, while the Level 2 and 3 courses provide more detail about specific topics. Each of these courses are hands-on courses where full participation is required. The courses divided into two or three levels require the preceding level to be completed prior to attempting the next level.
All course participants need to be computer literate and proficient in the use of Mircosoft Windows. Further, participants should either have a thorough working knowledge of PROKON or should complete the PROKON Level 1 course prior to attempting any of the Analysis courses or the Concrete, Steel, Timber and Masonry courses.
The courses are grouped together in blocks for those who need to travel great distances. They are presented at our offices in Brooklyn, Pretoria, and are all one day courses. Courses begin promptly at 8h30 and end about 16h00, with the exception of the Analysis Level 2 and Concrete Design and Detailing courses which could run overtime.
Course overviews
A brief summary on each of the Introductory and Intermediate courses follows:
- Prokon Level 1 : This is an overview of the PROKON suite of programs, excluding Padds. Topics include input of data, basic analysis of structures, reading program output and using Calcpad.
- Padds Level 1 : This course provides an overview of Padds, PROKON’s own drawing and detailing package. Topics covered include basic drawing commands, detailing with Padds, printing and plotting, and interfacing with other PROKON modules.
- Padds Level 2 : This is a slightly more advanced look at Padds, concentrating on the new scripting abilities of Padds. Padds Scripting is a Pascal-based programming language used to write your own sub-programs for all those frequently used actions – a much more powerful and flexible tool than the macro concept used previously.
Additional Requirements: Padds Level 1
- Analysis Level 1 : This course provides a general knowledge of using certain PROKON modules (namely Frame, Plane Stress Plane Strain, Beam and Beam on Elastic Supports) in the analysis of various structures.
Additional Requirements: PROKON Level 1 or sufficient experience
- Analysis Level 2 : This is a more in-depth look at the PROKON Frame Analysis program. Specialised elements, such as spring elements, shell elements and brick elements, and their use in modeling are studied. Finite element analysis and the application thereof is also briefly covered.
Additional Requirements: Analysis Level 1.
- Analysis Level 3 : Dynamic (modal, harmonic and seismic) analysis and non-linear analysis procedures and examples are explored. Raft foundations, and other complex examples are also covered, as is Captain, PROKON’s prestressed concrete design program.
Additional Requirements: Analysis Levels 1 & 2.
- Steel and Connection Design : This course concentrates on using the steel and connection modules of PROKON in steel design.
- Concrete Design and Detailing : The PROKON concrete modules are explored with an eye to more efficient design and detailing of concrete elements within a structure. Both reinforced and prestressed concrete design are covered, as is the finite element analysis of slabs.
- Timber and Masonry : This course concentrates on the timber and masonry modules of PROKON.
